MERLIN MUSIC SUMMER CAMP – Bookings now open!



Here at Merlin, we believe music is for all so we’re so delighted to be back this year with our popular summer camp which is a wonderful opportunity for advanced beginners through to advanced musicians from 12 years upwards, to spend five days together learning new skills from instruments including playing as part of a Band along with lots of different instruments to singing and performing together.

Children (aged 12-17yrs) are able to join us for taster days on the Monday 8th and/or Tuesday 9th August 9.30-4.30pm which will give them a brilliant taste of the camp. They are welcome to continue on for the rest of the week and perform in our final night concert on Friday 12th August. We can only offer taster days at the beginning of the week, as later in the week, groups will be more set and participants will be preparing for the Friday night concert. 

We’re excited to be returning with this exciting event after our hiatus due to Covid-19 and have an incredible list of Tutors to introduce you to. Come and immerse yourself in 5 days of musical workshops. Sharing Tunes, Stories and coming together with old friends.

Example of our Daily schedule:

9.30am : Meet up, registration
10.00am : Musical warm up for the vocal cords
11.00am-1.00pm : Music Workshops with Tutors
1.00pm-2.00pm : Lunch from our catering team
2.00pm-4.00pm : Music Workshops with Tutors
4.30pm : Day students depart
6.00pm : Evening activities begin for those staying on

Our end of week concert will take place on Friday 12th August – friends and family are warmly invited to join us on the evening. Any donations would be welcome for our wonderful chosen Charity, Logan’s Fund.

All participants that are signed up for the week, your evening meals are included as well as social, musical evenings with tutors and students performing informally as they catch up with old friends and make new friends.

Our 5-day-long Music Camp will be held in the stunning grounds of the Rowchester House County Estate in Greenlaw in the Scottish Borders. Our performance spaces include two large marquees. Rowchester House offers a brilliant space for Camping and Motorhomes along with plenty of parking. Campers staying on-site will have 24 hour access to toilets/wash hand basins on-site. Iain Fraser

Camp Leader & Fiddle and Mixed Instrument Tutor.

Our Summer Camp is led by our Music Director Iain Fraser. Iain’s
teaching includes group workshops, helping people young and old to pursue their musical dreams, as well as making music a fun social experience available to all.
Iain has been our fiddle tutor and music director for the last 10 years and is very passionate about offering high quality tuition in a fun relaxed environment.

Kathy Stewart Kennedy

Music Manager & Singing Tutor

Kathy Stewart-Kennedy will be leading workshops in Traditional and Contemporary Ballads, Singer/Songwriting and Vocal Harmonies. Kathy will be joined by a Ed to run additional workshops alongside her.

Kathy has been teaching Singing & Harmonies at Merlin Music Academy for a number of years now as well as being involved in many of our events such as our yearly Summer School. As a Natural Voice Practitioner and Vocal workshop facilitator, Kathy welcomes students of all ages who wish to improve their technique, gain confidence, learn performance skills or to ‘find their voice’ in a safe and relaxed environment.

Ed Miller

Traditional Scot’s Song Tutor

Originally from Edinburgh (with family background in the Borders), Ed Miller has lived in Austin Texas for more than four decades. He gained a PhD in Folklore from the University of Texas; but opted out of following an academic career.

Ed’s love of folk song started in the folk clubs and bars of Edinburgh as well as the Edinburgh Univ Folksong Society in the 1960’s. He is an award-winning singer with an interest in both traditional Scots songs and in the newer songs of the Folk Revival which are in the process of “becoming traditional.” Ed was a Merlin Summer Camp Tutor back in 2018 and worked closely with Kathy.  These two made a fantastic team leading the Singers.

Andy Gray

Merlin Guitar Tutor

Andy has been a Merlin Tutor for a number of years and has taught all genres of music.  He is passionate about offering tuition within a welcoming and friendly environment and has been involved with all the Merlin Summer Camps.  Andy will be on hand to help out with all guitarists and looks forward to welcoming you all.

Linzi Coulson

Merlin Fiddle Tutor

Linzi has taught Fiddle at Merlin for many years.  Discovering Merlin Academy of Traditional Music and under the stewardship of Iain Fraser, Linzi rekindled her love of Scottish fiddle and now delights in sharing her passion with others in writing, performing and tutoring. Linzi will be on hand to help out with all fiddlers and looks forward to welcoming you all.
