Merlin Academy of Traditional Music

The Merlin Academy

The Merlin Music Academy was founded in 2011 and is based in the very attractive Borders town of Melrose. We teach traditional folk, blues and acoustic music to all age groups and abilities within our 2 buildings in Melrose. We first started teaching Fiddle, Guitar and Accordion but have now grown considerably and offer music tuition over a huge range of instruments.  We have over 13 tutors working at the Academy all of whom are extremely passionate about offering first class tuition within a friendly, supportive and very importantly fun environment.   We believe that music tuition should be available to anyone with an interest in music and you are never too old to learn!   We have also recently started running Guitar and Fiddle classes on a Tuesday evening in our new centre in North Berwick

Here is a list of just some of the things on offer at the Academy:-

Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, Bagpipes, Fiddle, Saxophone, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Clarinet, Recorder, Flute, Piano, Keyboard, Drums, Percussion, Accordion, Vocal/Singer Song Writing groups, Rock Blues Band – mixed instruments, Traditional Adult Band – mixed instrument, Harmony Singing Group.

The Merlin Cafe

In 2013 we opened our Café. The Café is open to all members of the Public but is also a great space for Parents to relax and wait for their children instead of waiting in the car!  We serve delicious Italian Aroma Coffee and herbal teas along with a selection of homemade cakes.  The Café is open from 10am in a morning until late at night.

The Merlin Music Team

We have a great team of people working hard at the Academy behind the scenes. You will spot Andy Gray who teaches guitar serving a Latte or two and also chatting to students and customers at our front of house.  Iain Fraser is our Music Director and also teaches Fiddle at the Academy.  Bridget and Linda can be found in the Merlin Office just next to the Café.  They are responsible for bookings, billing, marketing and keeping all the students informed of what is happening.

We are so proud and delighted that Iain Fraser our Fiddler Tutor/Music Director has won the “Passing It On – Educators Award”. Congratulations Iain well derserved! Find out more about the awards here
